Update August 2025
Winfred van den Bor

Start Stuck in our cave house, we finally have the time to send you an update of our journey. The ongoing heatwave, that keeps Spain in its grip these days, forces us to stay indoors as much as possible.

The average temperature in August was 27,3 °C. During the day the temperature rises well above 35 °C. One day we almost touched the 40 with a temperature of 39,9 °C and at night the temperature didn’t drop below the 31 °C.

With humidity levels mostly between 5% and 15% it really feels hot. Not only for us, but also of the trees and shrubs. Just like us, plants lose water very quickly with this combination of heat and low humidity.

Especially the newly planted trees need a lot of attention, because they do not have an extensive root system to collect water yet. We will probably loose some of them, but most are holding on quite well. Fortunately for us the current prediction is that the heatwave will simmer down starting tomorrow. We might even get some rain!

The 'we-need-to-do-it-all' burnout

Realizing our dream is an enormous project. The last three years we worked on so many things, that it’s easy to loose track of progress and results. We even almost got lost ourselves along the way this year. We desperately needed to prioritize, shift focus on what is important and create a better balance. Want to know more about what happened?

Finally residents!

After three years we finally can officially call ourselves proud residents of the Canary Islands! It was a bumpy road where we ran into the Spanish bureaucracy. But is shouldn’t be Spain if there weren’t loopholes to get things done. As result we could celebrate the next step on our journey. Curious about that bureaucracy?
