Flowers, flowers, flowers

Our finca came with a small plantation of Australian Waxflowers (Chamelaucium). These 1700 m2 of shrubs produces popular white and pink cut flowers from december till march. Unfortunately, the last two years the production was falling because of the hot summers and dry winters.

Last year we extended our irrigation system to the two flower plantations with a total surface of 1700 m2. In combination with a wet winter and some biological fertilizer, we now see the shrubs growing fast. The harvest should be plentiful this year if they continue like this.

This year we are also planting 5 new varieties of wax flowers on a total of 2200 m2. The colors vary from clear white, to pink and purple. In the coming years we will be able to produce waxflowers from september till may.

Experimenting with cut flowers

We are also experimenting with other cut flowers and green fillers for boquetes. We are already growing silverberries (Elaeagnus ebbingei) as shrub that offers protecting and fruits for birds. But it is also a great green filler. This year we will start propagating them with plant cuttings to increase the number of shrubs for future production.

We also sowed a field with the popular cut flowers Statice (Limonium), Amaranth (Amaranthus) and Hare’s Ear (Bupleurum). Due to the late sowing and warm weather, this test is not a resounding success, but we will try again early next spring. In the meantime we will keep our eyes open for other interesting cut flowers and green fillers. If you have a suggestion, let us now!
